All rock formations on earth display natural radioactivity in varying proportions. Potassium, uranium and thorium are more commonly associated with shale as opposed to other compositions of rock formations. These elements naturally emit gamma rays. It is therefore possible to identify shale zones by measuring the gamma radiation adjacent to the drill pipe. Our MWD tools include the necessary components (gamma ray probes and computer software) to produce accurate gamma ray logs for the purpose of geosteering.
Geosteering is particularly useful when drilling horizontal boreholes in shale-gas wells, where a high concentration of uranium indicates the presence of high-yielding shale formations.
The best results are obtained when the distance between the probe and the drill bit is about six feet. This is because geosteering is most effective when the distance between the downhole sensor and the bit is as short as possible. This is to ensure that only a short length of fresh rock is drilled before the tool responds.
