Geosteering is a major application in gas and oil exploration. The term refers to the process of adjusting the inclination and azimuth angles of the borehole position in response to real-time telemetry while performing directional or horizontal drilling through shale rock formations. One of the telemetric components of the transmitted data using our MWD products is the amount of natural gamma radiation emitted by the rock being drilled.
The mineral elements that generate gamma radiation are potassium and thorium and, in particular, uranium. These elements are characteristically associated with shale rock more so than other rock types. Geosteering makes it possible to identify gas- or oil-rich shale deposits and assist in the positioning of the drill bit. A drill pipe screen protects the sensitive probe.
